Level Crossings

Public level crossings have a clearance of 5.6m (18ft 3ins) from track and road level to the contact wire height.  The masts either side of the level crossing are usually placed fairly close as to keep the span length down. The masts either side of these hold the contact wire at normal height. Where a station has a level crossing at one end the contact wire is sometimes kept at the higher height until out of the station.

Many level crossings have a public footbridge next to them, this dual obstacle causes the mast to carry a high level contact wire with a reduced encumbrance catenery wire.

Occupational crossings are normally at the same height as is normal for the line. These must have a height warning sign on the road approaches.
